Hi everyone,
Yesterday I was at a training course in the Cork Airport Hotel and as I was listening to the trainer, I have to admit my mind started to wander off thinking about the blog!
This Sunday my husband and I are running the Carmel Lynch Memorial 10k Road Race at UCC and I thought to myself wouldn’t it be lovely to mention Carmel in the blog. I am great friends with her sister Paula and I was thinking that I would give her a shout later that evening to ask her to send on some information about Carmel. When 11 o’clock came along for our coffee break and as I was scoffing the delicious chocolate chip cookie I promised myself I wouldn’t eat, sure enough, who did I see in the group next to me eating lovely fresh scones but Paula! What an amazing coincidence! Paula was more than delighted to help.
Carmel Lynch
“Carmel began running in the late 1970’s, competing in a number of marathons and various local 5k and 10k events in Cork city and county. She was very competitive and won a number of these events. The UCC annual 10k road race began in the mid-1980s, and Carmel was first lady home in the first (and I think second) year. She and her fellow UCC runners could be regularly seen running on the Carrigrohane Road at lunch-time and this is the route run for the race.
Carmel subsequently left UCC to go to work in London in 1986, where she remained until she died in March 2004. During this time, Carmel continued to run at various events, and built up a large collection of trophies and medals. After Carmel’s death 11 years ago, the UCC Sports Club honoured Carmel by renaming their annual event the Carmel Lynch Memorial Race.”
If anyone is interested in running on Sunday it starts at 11:00 a.m. and registration is at the UCC Western Gateway Buildings on Western Road. The starting line which is located next to the Mardyke Arena. You can also check out http://corkbhaa.com/ for details. The Cork Running blog http://corkrunning.blogspot.ie/ is another great website for details on runs throughout Munster.
Hope to see you on Sunday!
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
